Language Policy Partnership Priorities

The National Languages Policy Partnership continues to meet four times a year, most recently meeting for the sixth time in Gimuy. These policy meetings are paving the way for the partnership approach and government transformation required to achieve Target 16 of Closing the Gap.

Immediate action must be taken by all governments to increase the number and strength of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages being spoken by 2032. The policy partnership has identified seven national priority areas to guide progress and achieve success, they are:
- Languages legislation
- Bringing language home to the people and communities
- More funding that goes where communities need it
- Supporting the people, groups and organisations who work in languages
- Speaking and using languages
- Access to Country
- Help people understand the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages

The National Language Policy Partnership presented the seven priorities alongside a recommendation to take immediate action to the Joint Council on July 5. To find out more about the National Language Policy Partnership and priorities and to have your say visit lpp.org.au
