Zenadth Kes languages strengthening workshops
First Languages Australia is working to develop a Languages Sector Strengthening Plan under the National Agreement on Closing the Gap. To develop the plan, we will consult with the language network to identify priorities that will support strengthening our sector. The consultation will include up to 25 regional visits this year.
The first consultations began in October, when staff from FLA travelled to Zenadth Kes in response to a call from communities at the 2024 Zenadth Kes Language Symposium. We partnered with the Torres Strait Regional Authority’s Culture, Art, and Heritage Program, and Torres Strait Traditional Languages Association, to deliver community project planning workshops and community consultation on strengthening the languages sector on 6 islands.
With the community’s language and cultural needs at the forefront, FLA staff members Annalee Little, Kaleesha Morris and Jillian Bowie hosted workshops in the Saibai, Mer, Poruma, Badu and Waibene communities. Sector Strengthening workshops saw us collaborate with communities on:
step-by-step planning for strengthening and maintaining their culture and language;
identifying the needs and goals of their communities, and
work towards meaningful opportunities for the future growth of the languages of Zenadth Kes.
The events brought together Elders, youth and community members of all ages. Participants were filled with passion and enthusiasm to share their wisdom and goals for strengthening, promoting and celebrating their languages in partnership with us.
We would like to thank the Zenadth Kes communities for their knowledge sharing, participation and warm welcomes. Thank you for working together on stronger outcomes for our languages.
Please keep in touch to learn about or help us plan for consultations near you.
