Place names

As part of our ongoing place names collaborations, First Languages Australia took part in the October meeting of the National Place Name Working Group. Items on the agenda included:

  • progress regarding Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander place name recognition;

  • dealing with offensive names, and

  • outlining activities that each state and territory has prioritised for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages.

During the meeting, several states and territories presented on the work they have been doing with community to improve community control of place representation in their regions.

FLA is pleased to see progress being made in consultation with Traditional Owners and is looking forward to sharing case studies of recent activities this year.

Further information about work in this space is available from our website.
