Draft Priorities Paper

The International Decade of Indigenous Languages Directions Group has released a draft Indigenous Languages Priorities Paper for consultation within the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages sector.

You can view the Draft Priorities Paper here.

The Directions Group have created a 1 page summary of the Draft Priorities Paper.

Once finalised the paper will be provided to the Australian Government and the Languages Policy Partnership, and will inform the development of Australia’s Action Plan for the International Decade of Indigenous Languages 2022-2032.

The Directions Group has identified three overarching themes to inform five priority policy reforms requiring immediate action. Activities are listed to enable organisations, governments, and people to consider how they can work to strengthen Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

The three priority objectives are:

  • Stopping the loss

  • Ensure the safety and security of the current investment

  • Thinking about a new way forward

The five priority policy reforms are:

  • Develop a national approach

  • Sector strengthening

  • Access to education and employment opportunities

  • Truth telling and celebration

  • Community access to information

The Directions Group invite members of the languages sector to have input into the reform areas, priorities and activities and provide feedback on the paper.

We have extended the time for feedback, we kindly ask you to submit your feedback to  IndigenousLanguagesSecretariat@arts.gov.au by Friday, 21st April 2023.
