Spread the Word on Disney+

Disney+ celebrated NAIDOC Week 2020 with the premier of Spread the Word, our ten-part series that shares Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander words from language groups across the country. With over 500,000 words people might think the English language has a word for everything. But dig a little deeper and you’ll find it doesn’t... Luckily, there are hundreds of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages from which to draw inspiration, knowledge, and tons of great words! Spread the Word is a new, fun and fast-paced local series, where Indigenous comedians and Language Warriors Bjorn Stewart and Katie Beckett introduce you to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander words you never knew you needed.

Do you need a word to describe that feeling you get when you’re sick and cranky and just want everyone to leave you alone? In Yugambeh that’s called garu-garulen. Now you can use it every time you’re sick and just want to curl up under your doona by yourself.

Ever turned a room upside down looking for something you’ve lost? Yes? You have? And you made a huge mess? In Wiradjuri they have one word for the whole scenario – dirranyamgarra. How crazy that the Wiradjuri community came up with it thousands of years before your mum and dad could even think about getting cranky about your messy bedroom!

Spread the Word has been seen by more than 500,000 viewers on social media alone.
You can catch the series on Disney+, view it here for educational use, or language centres and programs can use this link.

Educators can access the series via Enhance TV, to share income with the participating language centres.
