Want to study Languages and Linguistics?
The Bachelor of Arts (Languages and Linguistics) and Diploma of Arts (Languages and Linguistics) at Charles Darwin University and Batchelor Institute provides students with the necessary skills and tools to carry out language work in a wide range of contexts and domains.
Students will learn fundamental concepts in linguistics that they can apply and adapt to their own language situations. Linguistics, the scientific study of language, is a wide and diverse field with many areas of specialisation. In this course students have the opportunity to explore the structure of languages (their sounds, words, sentences and meanings), their importance to our identity, how language use differs depending on context, culture and society, and how languages change and vary over time.
Knowledge in these areas prepares students to undertake language documentation, description, maintenance and revitalisation activities.
The linguistics units in the Bachelor of Arts have a focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders languages. In addition to linguistics units, the course offers language learning units allowing students to achieve skills in speaking an Indigenous language (Yolngu, Bininj Kunwok, Arrernte).
